A Class Motorhomes

The A Class or 'integrated' motorhome is easily recognisable as it doesn't have a separate cab area like a conventional coachbuilt motorhome. Instead it has flatter front profile with a large 'bus like' front windscreen. The A Class is usually imported from mainland Europe.

Built from scratch on a bare chassis by the motorhome manufacturer. Only the motor drive unit and dashboard are sourced from the chassis supplier. Often the chassis is modified to allow extra weight, length and storage. The manufacturers have significant scope to design stylish body styles with practical features such as insulated double floors, garage storage areas for things like scooters and spacious lounges. you can expect bags of room and home comforts including domestic style washrooms and kitchen fixtures, as well as full sized beds and light, roomy living areas.

There is no trace of "van" about these vehicles. Instead they are luxury motorised homes. They are usually a similar size to C-Class (coachbuilt) motorhomes, but often have only two or three berths - designed for adults to travel in considerable comfort, rather than for accommodating large families.

Popular manufacturers of A-class motorhomes include: Hymer, Frankia, Pilote and Dethleffs.

Coachbuilt Motorhomes

These are the most common type of motorhomes for sale in the UK and Europe and consequently they're also the most likely type you'll spot on British and European roads. They provide the best ratio of practicality and space. Their extra width means that full size beds can be fitted in.

These are motorhomes where the living area, including the walls floor and ceiling are built upon a chassis cab. The most popular chassis used are by Fiat, Ford, Renault, Iveco and VW. The roof of the cab is cut away and a bed area is built over the cab. These are also known as ‘overcab' style or C Class motorhomes.

The Coachbuilt motorhome is where a chassis cab base vehicle is used on which to permanently mount the habitation area. Sometimes the base vehicles original chassis is retained and on other occasions a replacement AL-KO brand lightweight chassis platform is used as the basis for all the running gear. This type of construction also features an over cab compartment - often referred to as a Luton. This space is normally used as double bed sleeping area, but nowadays is often made lower and used as a storage area rather than sleeping accommodation. When used as a storage area - the look of the vehicle is more streamlined and sleek. For that reason these are often referred to as 'Low Profile' motorhomes.

Using the over cab space as a bedroom means that quite a large space has to be allocated for this purpose and hence the vehicle can be less aero dynamic and fuel efficient. These Low Profile coachbuilt motor homes have less sleeping spaces (berths) and are ideal for couples or small families. The living accommodation can incorporate a variety of facilities, layouts and bed provisions, depending on the size of the vehicle.
