The Mazda Bongo – Owner Reviews

A selection of reviews written by owners of the innovative Mazda Bongo campervan - also sold as the Ford Freeda.

"The Bongo drives like a car, can be used on a daily basis and is very versatile. We had ours converted for camping, it sleeps four at a push and two comfortably, add an awning and you have lots of space.

Bongo fury the owners club/forum is very useful for picking up info/parts, basically anything to do with Bongo's.

Once you have driven one you will be hooked."

"We have had our Bongo conversion for 5 years and it has never let us down. We have been all over Europe in it and driven in all weathers. Often referred to as a weekend vehicle, we are often away for 3 weeks with no problems at all. We bought it with my husband's retirement 'lump sum' and it has been the best purchase we have ever made. Minor disadvantages. 1. It is too tall for most height barriers. 2. MPG not great (20-25mpg)."

"We have had our Mazda Bongo a year now, and we are already looking at what we can do to extend her life (e.g. quality replacement components, waxoiling, etc).

She has a few issues, but most we can get fixed as we go.

The kids (6 and 4) both love her, and we have no problem getting them ready to go out when it is in the Bongo. Just cant imagine life without her now!"

"Great Vehicle

Easily adaptable

Cheap parts readily available

Loads of online support

The Mazda Bongo Friendee (also known as the Ford Freda ) is a great vehicle. It has a few quirks but the array of features far outway any of the minor issues."

"We bought our Mazda Bongo two years ago. We were looking for a people carrier but also needed something for touring abroad and with enough space to transport items to and from our holiday home. This was more than ideal its great to drive and easier to park than our car. We had some overheating problems but all it needed was a good Bongo garage. I can't praise it enough."

5 Stars

"The Mazda Bongo is great all round, would recommend to anyone camping , towing or large family with its 8 seats.

Had mine for 1 year and no problems at all. great camping or towing van for a great price. Drives like a car, easy to park."

"We had a coverted our Mazda Bongo in the UK and loved it, we were very sad when we had to sell it in order to go travelling. The engine was great, we owned it for 2 years and never had any problems. The rear conversion was great, and having a fridge was a really good idea as you can enjoy a cold beer with a BBQ or your dinner.

We will definitely buy another bongo."

Budget Camper Vans & Motorhomes

You don't have to spend a fortune to buy your first camper or motorhome. Once you've tasted the freedom of motorhoming however, you'll likely want to upgrade from time to time as you get nearer to finding the perfect vehicle for your holiday needs. One great thing about motorhomes as they get older is that they reach a point where they hardly devalue at all year-on-year. As a matter of fact, I've never yet lost money on any of the motorhomes I've owned. If you buy at the right price and use it for a year or two before selling it on you ought to be able to get virtually free use of the van, apart from your fuel & running costs such as insurance, road tax etc.

A Class Motorhomes

The A Class or 'integrated' motorhome is easily recognisable as it doesn't have a separate cab area like a conventional coachbuilt motorhome. Instead it has flatter front profile with a large 'bus like' front windscreen. The A Class is usually imported from mainland Europe.

Built from scratch on a bare chassis by the motorhome manufacturer. Only the motor drive unit and dashboard are sourced from the chassis supplier. Often the chassis is modified to allow extra weight, length and storage. The manufacturers have significant scope to design stylish body styles with practical features such as insulated double floors, garage storage areas for things like scooters and spacious lounges. you can expect bags of room and home comforts including domestic style washrooms and kitchen fixtures, as well as full sized beds and light, roomy living areas.

There is no trace of "van" about these vehicles. Instead they are luxury motorised homes. They are usually a similar size to C-Class (coachbuilt) motorhomes, but often have only two or three berths - designed for adults to travel in considerable comfort, rather than for accommodating large families.

Popular manufacturers of A-class motorhomes include: Hymer, Frankia, Pilote and Dethleffs.

RV / American Motorhomes

The Recreational Vehicle or RV as it has become known is massively popular in the United States and becoming ever-more popular in Europe. Coming from the USA these units are typically big, bold and brash but they do offer massive amounts of space, comfort and features such as full-sized refrigerators and ovens along with king sized beds and bathrooms with fittings to rival any home. For those wanting even more room, many even feature 'slide outs' in which certain sections of the motorhome can be extended sideways to create extra floor space.

Typically used for long holidays or even touring permanently around Europe or the US, these leviathans really are unrivalled when it comes to luxury and comfort. The downside is that their fuel consumption is unrivalled too - and not in a good way!

Popular manufacturers of American RV motorhomes include: Winnebago, Coachmen, Airstream, Fleetwood and Northwood.

Camper Vans

Most widely known is the VW campervan but there are many more variations available. Nowadays, they are usually converted from a standard panel-van that has had windows and all of the required features and comforts of a motorhome added. They mostly have sufficient headroom to allow an adult to be able to stand up inside without stooping.

They are the smallest and least expensive of all the motorhome types. This small size can be seen as both an advantage and hindrance. It certainly keeps the price down but it does however often mean that space inside is at a premium and they can be cramped inside, especially if more than a couple of people are using it.

Coachbuilt Motorhomes

These are the most common type of motorhomes for sale in the UK and Europe and consequently they're also the most likely type you'll spot on British and European roads. They provide the best ratio of practicality and space. Their extra width means that full size beds can be fitted in.

These are motorhomes where the living area, including the walls floor and ceiling are built upon a chassis cab. The most popular chassis used are by Fiat, Ford, Renault, Iveco and VW. The roof of the cab is cut away and a bed area is built over the cab. These are also known as ‘overcab' style or C Class motorhomes.

The Coachbuilt motorhome is where a chassis cab base vehicle is used on which to permanently mount the habitation area. Sometimes the base vehicles original chassis is retained and on other occasions a replacement AL-KO brand lightweight chassis platform is used as the basis for all the running gear. This type of construction also features an over cab compartment - often referred to as a Luton. This space is normally used as double bed sleeping area, but nowadays is often made lower and used as a storage area rather than sleeping accommodation. When used as a storage area - the look of the vehicle is more streamlined and sleek. For that reason these are often referred to as 'Low Profile' motorhomes.

Using the over cab space as a bedroom means that quite a large space has to be allocated for this purpose and hence the vehicle can be less aero dynamic and fuel efficient. These Low Profile coachbuilt motor homes have less sleeping spaces (berths) and are ideal for couples or small families. The living accommodation can incorporate a variety of facilities, layouts and bed provisions, depending on the size of the vehicle.
